I use photocollage - photographs of natural materials, pattern and texture, light and shade – to portray the figure drawn from life or emerging in social context.
For many years I have worked with children, families and community groups incorporating art and craft work as one of a range of means of communication, expression of feelings and therapeutic relationship building.
For the past 7 years I have studied life drawing. I have enjoyed slowly improving my drawing skills and extending my range of techniques and approaches. I have tried out print and graphics, pastels, oils and watercolours.
I began using photocollage as abstract collages of texture and light using my own photographs - tree bark from Ecclesall woods, marble from Istanbul, Roman drain pipes, carved stonework from China, ancient standing stones, wet sand or sea.
I then began to develop collage to portray the life figure. I am now moving towards social context and personal relationships. Figures not inanimately carved in stone, but emerging out of the landscape, living and interacting with each other and the observer.
