I walk the landscape and draw directly from nature, then, back in the studio, painting is like a process of ‘excavation’; physical, emotional and psychological.
I walk the landscape and draw directly from nature. My creative energy starts to ebb if I don’t do this. But then I need time to process the sensations. This happens back in the studio. A painting will start with mark making. One patch of colour will speak to another patch of colour, a bunch of marks here will relate to another bunch of marks somewhere else on the canvas or paper and, before I know it, a landscape will start to emerge. I will start to form psychological and emotional connections with the colours and marks. It often feels more like a process of excavation as the image, and therefore the “meaning”, emerges from the layers of paint and marks. It’s as if the building up of the layers of acrylic and oil gives the painting a “history” which I can “unearth”.
