‘A sketch a day keeps the doctor at bay’ – works include journeys and memories, concerts, landscapes and buildings, Yorkshire’s ruined abbeys, Sheffield’s steel industry and heritage, ‘objects of desire’, theatre cards. Original works, etchings, and cards.

My career was in education. Recently I took up etching and printmaking and have exhibited at the Royal Academy. I also exhibit in local and regional galleries and have exhibited and sold at the Ferens Open, Hull.

I like to paint onsite directly from the subject because that gives me confidence and a sense of authenticity. The English tradition of water colours, particularly Turner and Hockney, inspire and influence my work and from John Piper, Moore, Sutherland, I derive a mix of materials often drawing first in oil pastels to give a ground, with pen and ink for detail. I also enjoy quick sketching of musicians in concert. I find sketching in galleries and exhibitions an essential practice for technique and a source of ideas.

My themes are landscapes and gardens, cities and buildings, cathedrals and the ruined abbeys of Yorkshire, and sketching in Sheffield’s steel industry, large foundries and small workshops. I turn my paintings into a small cottage industry of making cards for sale.
