My current machine embroideries explore the combination of various elements of my work over the last 40 years – landscape, seascape and costume for dance.
2012 is the 40th anniversary of my career in textiles! I started studying for my Degree in Embroidery at Loughborough in 1972 and have worked in that discipline ever since. My work has always involved lots of drawing from observation – landscape, seascape, gardens and sometimes architectural detail. I use a sewing machine as a drawing instrument, reproducing both realistic images and developing interesting surfaces. My work is often presented as either decorative wall panels or fashion accessories.
Over the last 30 years I have also been involved in designing and making costume for performance, both dance and ice skating. I have often used my creative textile skills in the costume design but my current work is a fresh approach that explores an attempt to combine the costume structures into my machine embroidered pieces.
